The truth is, we can be really mean to ourselves in times when we should actually be the most loving and supportive.
Do you resonate with any of these?
Have you ever been to party and after you get home you regret half of what you said?
Have you ever stood in front of a mirror completely disgusted with yourself?
Have you ever eaten too much? Drank too much? Gossiped too much?
Have you ever allowed someone to embarrass you and you couldn’t stand up for yourself?
If you’ve done any one of these things:
How did you feel about yourself in the moment?
What did you think about yourself in the moment?
What are the words you used to describe yourself?
Were those thoughts and feelings supportive?
Or were those thoughts and feelings just mean – maybe even a little self-abusive?
Would you think and feel the same of your kids if they were in the same position?
If you wouldn’t talk to your kids that way then why do you talk to yourself that way?
Why do you deserve such treatment?
Food for thought: if you wouldn’t say it to your kids – don’t say it to yourself.
“You yourself as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.” Buddha (And even more so when you’re feeling bad about yourself.)
